I highly recommend Covent Garden at any time of the year. But it is especially beautiful at Christmas. The best memory of Covent Garden I have is of two women singing an operatic piece. I do not know what it's called but it was the piece that British Airways tend to use for their adverts.

Unfortnately, like many cities, London is extremely expensive. I would personally avoid hotels wherever possible, look into hostels or London serviced apartments. Save your money for things like the London Eye or a West End Show. You will take memories back from those, so it would be money well spent. But hotels are soon forgotten.
