A travel visa is a stamp that authorities of a foreign country place on your passport that will permit you to travel to that country. These visas are acquired from either the embassies or consulates of the country you want to visit.  There isn’t just a single type of travel visa that exists. You will apply for the kind that best defines the reason for your visit.

The least that you will require for a visa is a passport that has not expired. Different places have their own prerequisites. When the visa is stamped on the passport, the date of stamping and the expiry of the visa is also put in. In some countries, your passport requires being valid for six months when applying for visa.

The duration of getting a visa also varies according to the place you are applying to as does its duration. Sometimes the visa expires only when the passport does.

The usual procedure is to visit the specific consulate or embassy and fill in the necessary form. You can also mail this form. Along with the obligatory fees, photographs are also to be attached. A self-addressed envelope with sufficient postage is to be sent along too. Be sure to send these through a secure courier company. If you need the visa quickly, additional fees have to be paid. A commercial visa service can provide many visas swiftly. They will save you the time of applying for each one differently.

The three types of visas that are mostly applied for are:

1)    Work: this kind of visa is required when you are traveling to a country for job purposes. It takes a fair amount of work and is also rather costly. Usually, the paperwork and cost is handled by the employer who is calling you to that country.

2)    Student: this one is for students traveling for their education. This one is fairly easy to get. The basic documents one would need are your passport, an acceptance letter from the institute where you are headed, a statement from your bank that conveys you can support yourself while studying, your ticket, accommodation proof and some photographs.

3)    Tourist: this one is the most commonly applied for. This would be the one you apply for when you are only visiting by way of holiday.

Some countries require multiple-entry visas. This is needed when you plan to visit other places apart from that country.  If you are just passing through a certain country but do not intend on staying, you will require a transit visa.

Getting a visa does not imply that you are purchasing ‘entry’ into a country. It is not necessary that you always have a visa granted. By applying for a visa, you are really asking for prior permission from the authorities to enter the country. They are free to accept or reject your application and need not always provide the grounds of their decision.
