The idea of traveling can be very exhilarating.  You tend to forget many things in the anticipation of a cheap holiday that you managed to get. But one of the crucial things that you must never overlook is travel insurance.

If there were any medical or financial emergencies to occur during the trip, insurance would enable you to cover them. This would be very useful whether you travel within your country or abroad.

The travel agency that you book your trip through can be depended upon to provide you with insurance. These can give you cover for the exact span of the trip. Apart from these, there are travel insurance companies that offer more coverage, for a longer period of time.  Even travel agents can be approached for obtaining the indemnity.

There are several situations that can arise when traveling. Some of them, apart from the usual injury cover, are:

1)    Delays in flights: this could be technical or administrative.

2)    Any kind of cancellation or interruption of the trip, due to natural calamities or political issues.

3)    If an emergency evacuation takes place.

4)    Any kind of setbacks in sending or receiving luggage.

5)    Loss, burglary or damage of valuables, travel documents etc.

In addition to these, insurance also covers any medical conditions that you already have and any sickness that emerges from the use of certain drugs and alcohol. Insurance is granted for pregnancy, provided that it is in the first quarter at the time of the journey.

There is no one type of insurance today. There are abundant policies that can be tailored to your needs. If you are traveling to an international destination, you can avail of the international travel insurance. There are different policies for business and leisure trips. If you are a student, there is a different kind of policy for you.

Insurance also depends upon the kind of mode of travel you are opting for. Airplane insurance and ship cruise insurances are available. Air travel insurance can be bought before boarding the flight. This provides an approximate amount to your family or who ever you choose as nominee.

Cruises also have their individual policies. Like air travel, you need to but them when buying the tour. Mishaps at sea are occurrences that happen often enough. A ship might have to dock at an unscheduled port and so there maybe delays. Insurance will cover you on this and will guarantee that your money isn’t wasted.

If insurance is bought by the travel agency or tour operator, you will be charged about 5% to 7% of the total cost of the package for the insurance. It would useful to take insurance that offers emergency cashless services.

Always do some research and compare prices before deciding. Some Internet study and phone calls should suffice and save you much trouble later.

Traveling can involve a lot of unexpected happenings. It is wise to be prepared and planned before embarking on a trip to make it memorable.
