When on a trip overseas, it is very convenient to have your own mode of transport. It will save your time on getting to bus stops or tube stations. Investing a little in car rentals will go a long way.

The first step to take in getting a rented car is booking it. Do this over the phone as rental rates are far more when you reach the country. No matter how early you book your car at the destination, it will be expensive. So make sure you tele-book well in advance.

Get the best deal in rental by doing good research. Check phone directories and Internet. Do some comparison in the prices. The earlier you book, the cheaper it will be for you.

Get over with the booking when you are in your country itself. Once you reach the destination, you will face several obstacles. There might be problems in conversing with rental officials. The exchange rate might differ much more than you expected and end up costing you more or cause much confusion.

There is a difference between cars in different countries. Cars in Europe are smaller than ones in America. Ensure you are selecting a car that is appropriate to the number of members you have with you and the luggage you have. Also, the roads of Europe are trickier because of its highlands and narrow winding roads. Pick a vehicle that will enable you to navigate these paths. Similarly, be sure whether you are more comfortable with manual or automatic.

Many countries have articles that refer to a minimum and maximum age for renting cars. You may not be able to rent in that case. You may have been banking on it. And even if you do manage to get a car, you might be charged extra. So be aware of the age constraints.

Read your agreement in detail before you make any payments. There might be hidden sections that involve extra charges for gas or fine for turning in the car late. It is better to ask about these situations yourself. Be clear about the pick-up and drop-off time of the car.

Ask about special deals. Most might not tell you without some prompting. Also, there might be some special deals for senior citizens. Some particular credit cards may be liable for discounts such as frequent fliers.

As far as licenses are concerned, most countries where English is spoken accept American licenses. A document that will help you in just about every country is the International Driving Permit (IDP). This is really just a piece of paper that will transliterate your license information in many languages. This will help you no matter where you travel. An IDP is recognized in about 150 countries.

It is imperative that you acquaint yourself with the road rules of your destination. Keep in mind the road etiquette of these places. Make and stick to a realistic budget for gas depending on where you intend to travel. Checking your auto insurance would aid you if you were to be involved in an accident with your rented car. See if they cover rentals.

Lastly, don’t forget to keep a map in handy. You never know when you lose your way.
